About the Slump Mold
The inside slump mold tends to have a rougher surface than the outer, smoother hump mold, and may have minor imperfections such as small air bubbles. We have not found that these to transfer onto the clay. However, every mold can differ, as each is handmade. Any transfer would be slightly raised on the piece's outside, and can be removed/smoothed with a metal/hard pottery rib once demolded.
The inner slump mold may be a bit off center within the outer hump mold. This can be seen in the upright mold photo where the rim varies in thickness around the top perimeter. This should have no impact on slumped pieces except if you want to use the rim to make a flange; to do so, you'd need to base it on the narrowest width. For example, if the rim varies from 8/16th to 10/16th of an inch, the flange should be 8/16th of an inch.
Simultaneously Slumping and Draping
As shown in one of the samples above, we've used the hump slump mold to make two pottery bowls at the same time. These were simple slabs, and each bowl took just a few minutes to make.
While we wouldn't usually utilize this two for one pottery making technique, it's certainly possible, and hugely fun! Since the rim has no clay, when inverted to use the hump mold, the inner bowl is safely tucked away inside.
The order in which we made these two bowls was: used the inner slump mold first, after which the outside hump mold was used. We removed in the same order: the slumped bowl was demolded first, followed by lifting off the draped bowl.
Note that these were made within a few minutes of each other, so that the slump mold has almost no shrinkage and is not at risk of falling out of the mold when inverted to use the mold's hump side.
