Slump Molds for Making Pottery

We manufacture and sell plaster slump molds which can be used to make pottery by either press-molding or slipcasting in your preferred clay body (stoneware, earthenware, and porcelain).

Note: To slipcast, it is assumed you are familiar with slip casting one and multi-part plaster molds, and the studio where you make pottery supports using and firing casting slips.

Quickly Slump Mold Pottery

Because plaster molds absorb the clay's water, you can often quickly make pottery using slump molds: as soon as the clay firms up and can support its shape, place a support such as a bat or piece of foam on top of the slump mold (fully covering the pottery, with a half inch or more on all sides of the support) and then flip it over. Slowly start to lift the mold upward. If it's ready to release, you will see it start to fall onto the support. Completely lift off the mold, and you're ready to start the next pottery piece!

Generally, there's a longer wait time to remove the mold when slipcasting than when press-molding, because casting slip contains far more water. For either method, since clay shrinks as it dries, you will notice the clay pull away and inward from the slump mold.

Casting Slips - We've used these slump molds with commercially available casting slips, which you can often buy at art supply stores or online in 1 or 2 gallon containers in stoneware, earthenware, and porcelain, with varying firing ranges.
