While you don't need many tools to hand-build pottery, there are certainly several helpful ones:
-
A versatile wood tool for all types of handbuilding is this hard wood Kemper rib, perfect for smoothing.
-
A scoring tool, for working with slabs and coils, is a time-saver, and this one, which doubles as a texture tool, is faster to use than a pin tool since it has multiple tips, and far superior to a fork especially on thin coils/slabs.
-
A pony roller comes in handy for many hand-building techniques, from rolling in texture or tapering sides of handles.
-
And for making slabs, a simple wood rolling pin like this one is a must-have: priced right, what we like about this one is the handles roll too, making it much easier on the palms of your hands if you're rolling a lot of clay!
